COMMUNIQUE OF THE 32ND ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE FISHERIES SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (FISON) HELD IN AKWA, ANAMBRA STATE, FROM 23RD -27TH OCTOBER 2017

COMMUNIQUE OF THE 32ND ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE FISHERIES SOCIETY OF NIGERIA (FISON) HELD IN AKWA, ANAMBRA STATE, FROM 23RD -27TH OCTOBER 2017

The 32nd Annual Conference of Fisheries Society of Nigeria (FISON) took place from 23rd to 27th October 2017 at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka Anambra State, with the theme ‘Harnessing the Fisheries and Aquaculture value chain in a recession developing economy’. The Conference was declared open by His Excellency, the Governor of Anambra State - Chief Dr. Willie Obiano, who was ably represented by the Commissioner for Agriculture, Hon. Afam Mbanefo. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development was also represented by the Deputy Director Fisheries, Mr. Istifanus Emmanuel Pwaspo, while the keynote address was delivered by Prof A.O Fagbenro, FFS of Federal University of Technology, Akure.

A total of 304 participants attended the conference where papers were presented on various aspects of Fisheries and Aquaculture highlighting the challenges facing the industry and recommendations for probable solutions were proffered.
At the end of the conference the Society, therefore resolved as follows:
i.                    That it reaffirmed her commitment to promoting the professional and practitioner development of all categories of stakeholders involved in Aquaculture, Capture fisheries and Post-harvest management subsector operations as well as fisheries research and development in Nigeria.

ii.                  That the conference resolves that harnessing the fisheries and aquaculture value chain is the panacea for Nigeria developing economy and as such the Society called on both the Federal and State Governments to provide the enabling environment, infrastructure (power, good roads, access to single-digit interest rate credit facilities, etc) in order to enhance the growth and development of the fisheries and aquaculture operations.

iii.                That Society noted that there has been appreciable development in human capital and researches in the Fisheries and Aquaculture operations and is in good standing to export her expertise to other African countries.

iv.               That the Society appreciated the Federal and State Governments in their efforts to get the country certified for export of her Capture fisheries and aquaculture products to International markets.  She, however, emphasized that the process should be fast-tracked and concluded to enable investors’ access foreign market for the requisite foreign exchange earnings.

v.                 That the Society has also resolved that there is the need for specialization along the fish production value chain for proper development and optimal maximization of the benefits of Fisheries sub-sector.

vi.               The Conference also empowered youths to opportunities in the Fisheries industry for self-empowerment.
